The UMCP College of Education is devoted to both basic and applied research to increase new knowledge in all facets of education and human development, from infancy through adulthood. With equity in education, a defined principle, concentration is focused on quality education and human services for individuals in team-oriented groups and communities.
The College of Education at the University of Maryland (UMD) offers thirty degree programs, with specializations in Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. The primary departments are Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education; Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology; and Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The department programs are designed to encourage thoughtful explorations of the practices involved with educational policies and considerations of social issues. Graduate students receive preparation for creating and critiquing alternative courses of action that would enhance the quality of education for all persons and redress the social conditions that limit democratic aspirations.
The Successful Merger
The newly formed UMD Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Education are the result of merging the Department of Curriculum and Instruction with the Department of Education Policy Studies, formerly the Department of Leadership, International and Higher Education. Graduates of the department have risen to distinguishable positions. Tracy Oliver-Gary, a UMD College of Education graduate, received the Culturally Responsive Teacher Award sponsored by Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Other graduates have received their own high recognition. James Limbough, who received his doctorate of philosophy (PhD) in educational policy and leadership from UMD College of Education, has been appointed Chancellor at Montana State University-Northern. Teacher of the Year Award was granted to alumni, Colleen O’Brien. Colleen received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Elementary Education in 2007 and completed her Master’s degree specializing in Reading Education in 2011.
UMCP College of Education Projects
The College of Education is a dedicated center to exploring the learning potential through innovative and stimulating approaches. Faculty from the Department of Measurement, Statistics and Evaluations are investigating novel digital learning concepts using environments such as serious, educational video games and simulations. The project integrates the most advanced theories concerning learning, natural language processing, document analysis, assessment design and statistical modeling.
The Brain Imaging Center focuses on multiple facets of social and emotional development by using brain imaging methods to link psychological processes with neural activity. Investigating Vocabulary targets English monolingual and Spanish-English bilingual children in grade levels two through five. The project seeks to understand the vocabulary of breadth and depth and study the relationship in classroom instruction and children’s growth in these skills over time.
The Strategic Plan for the College of Education (COE)
The College of Education at the University of Maryland College Park has a number of goals for its institute of higher learning. It is the intention of COE to add to the equity and diversity of the learning experience by improving the educational opportunities and outcomes in classrooms through supporting diverse undergraduates, graduates and alumni, as well as cross-cultural understandings and practices.
The College of Education, UMD, supports innovation and creativity in the technical revolution as it produces new ways of communicating and doing research worldwide. Its goal is to become established as world leaders in International education, and attain preeminent stature by providing research-based insights supporting policy development on pressing local, state, national, and international educational and human development issues.
Support of the College of Education’s vision will enhance the status of UMD’s educational program world-wide. Its vision is one of equality with lasting impact on the abilities of under-served populations to acquire higher educational goals. Its policy is to encourage innovative methods that will assist in its goals. Graduates from COE receive the opportunity to explore the exciting frontiers of globally exchanged research and methods in education.
