General Career Information for Car Salesman

It requires a lot of effort and persuasion skills for a car salesperson to become successful. He or she is responsible for a customer once they arrive at the car dealership. The sales person escorts the customer all around, showing them the different types of automobiles available for sale and even helping the customer during test drive where necessary.

When customers visit the car dealership’s website, the sales person reads their comments and responds to their queries where necessary. Additionally, the sales person spearheads the negotiation process once a customer accepts to buy any car found in the car dealership.

Education Requirements for Car Salesman

Apart from having a high school diploma or GED training as we had earlier mentioned, if you wish to join this career, you might think of furthering your education by pursuing an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in business or in communications. Besides this, you may attend an automobile training program that covers knowledge on automobile repair.

If you seek to join a career in salesmanship, but at a higher position in office, pursuing the aforementioned degree programs will help you a lot. Background training in automotive technology, business, computers or mathematics may also give you an added advantage in this profession.

Most car dealerships prefer to give an on job kind of training, and usually what happens is that you are given an experienced partner to work with, after which you can start to persuade customers to buy cars on your own. The mentorship program can take somewhere between six and twelve months. If you get lucky to be employed by a large car dealership, your training will be more advanced and progressive. For instance, you would get to learn how to handle customers once they arrive at the dealership, negotiation skills and you are even given an opportunity to understand the different features of automobiles.

The job growth rate in this career field is about 10% per year, which is likely to grow at this rate up to 2022. The median salary on the other hand for all salespeople in the automotive sector is $43,790.
