There are many different paths one can take when choosing the culinary arts field. Once you have your degree, be ready for some competition. There is a strong competition for jobs in areas that pay the highest salaries. Those with a combination of business skills, highest creativity skills, and previous work experience will have the best and highest paid job opportunities.

Opportunities are best for those chefs and head cooks with several years of work experience. The majority of job opportunities will result from the need to replace those workers who are leaving the culinary field.

Culinary Job Outlook and Salary

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the overall population and income growth is expected to rise and said to bring in a greater demand for high-quality supplies, such as dishes, in more upscale establishments.

The job growth is expected to be at 5% between the years 2012 and 2022, which is thought to be slower than average. In other establishments, they will be looking to cut costs and attempt to bring in cooks and other food service workers to perform much of the same duties.

It is further stated that the lower percentile makes around $25,000 per year, and the median pay is around $43,000 per year with the higher salaries being around $74,000 per year. The level of salary varies greatly by region and employer, and competition for executive chefs and positions in major metropolitan areas and resorts is very high. Some will also work on cruise ships while approximately 13% are self employed and run their own restaurants and provide catering.

Most work full time with early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays, and they will work long hours to provide services to their customers and clients. Because of the long hours as well as fast-paced and high-energy environment, there is a high rate of turnover.

The duties in the culinary arts field can vary depending on position, such as executive chef, head chef, chef de cuisine, sous chef, and private household chefs. There are also bakers, pastry chefs, and so on.

The types of duties for a chef include:

•Checking food and ingredients for freshness
•Supervising and coordinating activities for cooks and other food workers
•Developing recipes
•Determining the presentation of the cuisine
•Planning menus
•Ensuring portions are uniform
•Ensuring the quality of the meals
•Inspecting supplies, equipment, and work areas
•Ensure functionality and sanitation
•Ensure all practices are in compliance with safety standards

At a later point, you may also hire, train, supervise, order, and maintain all inventories.
