Acting Schools in Florida with Degree Program Information

Individuals who aspire to act in theatre or films can complete a college degree program in theatre arts or acting. Two of the nation’s largest universities are in Florida, and they offer bachelor and master degree programs in acting. The two schools are University of Central Florida (located in Orlando, Florida) and University of Florida (located in Gainesville, Florida). In this article, students will discover popular schools that offer programs in film studies or cinema production services.

University of Florida Acting Programs

This is the largest university in the state of Florida and among the five largest schools in the nation. University of Florida’s diverse academic programs has over 51,000 students enrolled. The acting programs are conducted at the university’s School of Theater and Dance.

Bachelor of Fine Arts – Theater Performance

Admission criteria in this four-year program include students’ participation in a faculty interview or audition. Courses in acting concentrate on movement, application, discipline and analysis. Additional program coursework involves dance technique, script analysis, history of theater and stagecraft. Labs and stage performance are devised to teach acting styles. The curriculum also includes an audition workshop.

Master of Fine Arts – Acting

This intensive three-year program is a combination of classroom lectures and hands on training in on-campus productions and internships. Coursework is delivered through lab workshops in acting techniques, directing, creative processes and seminars in acting. During the final year of the program, students will participate in an internship with a professional theater.

Acting Programs at University of Central Florida

University of Central Florida is the nation’s third-largest school that opened in 1968, and has twelve colleges in Orlando with over 50,000 students enrolled in its two hundred twenty-five degree programs. An undergraduate and graduate degree program in acting is offered through the theater department at the school’s College of Arts and Humanities.

Bachelor of Fine Arts – Acting Training

Scene studies and acting studios are combined with classroom instruction in this 129-hours program to help students get ready for a stage acting career. Dance, development of character, voice training, improvisation, movement and basic stage tasks are addressed during the first two years of the program. During the final two years, a majority of student’s time are spent in acting studios to work on their performance along with professional internship that is introduced during the senior year of study.

Master of Fine Arts – Theater

Sixty-one credit hours are required to be completed in the Master of Fine Arts program. Careers in professional theater and theater research methods are included in coursework. Topics such as advanced scene study, American theater, contemporary theater practice and dramatic theory are addressed in classroom instruction. Acting studios concentrate on voice, stage, and additional acting techniques. During the third year of the program, students will complete a professional internship.
