The list below is the top twenty largest schools in Alabama, excluding for-profit schools.
University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa, Alabama
This is the second biggest educational institution in Alabama and its flagship university that attracts about 27,000 students annually. Begun in 1831, University of Alabama is the oldest public college in the state. In 2009, it was ranked among the top fifty public universities in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. In 2010, the same organization ranked the university’ law school 30th on its list of best graduate schools. The university offers undergraduate students a wide range of areas of specialization to choose from, along with a plethora of choices for research and graduate study.

Troy University – Troy, Alabama
Troy University is the state’s largest university, with seven campuses offering undergraduate majors ranging from education and history to design and journalism. Troy University’s graduate programs include counseling, nursing and a wide variety of programs in education, including physical education and music education. The university also offers doctoral programs in specific subject areas. Some degree programs are also offered online through the university’s eCampus program.
