Leading Schools Offering Graduate Programs in Broadcasting
There are a variety of top graduate schools in the U.S. offering broadcasting programs through their journalism departments. Students are able to take courses or specialize in broadcast journalism and broadcasting. Two high ranking schools offering broadcast journalism graduate programs are the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and New York University (NYU). Modern courses in topics such as podcasting are available through UC Berkeley. NYU is known for offering a visual communications program, the U.S. News & World Report ranks NYU specifically for this program.
University of California at Berkeley
The National Academies Press noted that UC Berkeley had the most graduate programs ranked among the nation’s top 10 on its 1995 findings from the National Research Council. A Master of Journalism program is available through the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism wherein students are allowed to select concentrations in radio or television, both of which are devised to prepare students for careers in broadcast journalism. Core coursework covers topic areas such as TV reporting, broadcast skills and style, and podcasting.
New York University
The U.S. News & World Report ranked New York University 11th on its 2012 list of best multimedia and visual communications programs in the nation. Graduate degrees are available through the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and at least 14 other academic divisions. Ten fields of graduate study are available through NYU’s Journalism Institute, wherein a Master of Arts (M.A.) is pursuable for students in their area of interest. Apart from techniques in print journalism and broadcasting, the opportunity is given to experiment with Web-based journalism by combining audio and video broadcasting.
