In 2013, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Stanford University in Stanford, CA 4th on its list of best Ancient History graduate programs. Programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels are available at the school. Ancient history is one of the four concentrations offered at the doctorate level. Enrollees learn about the history of the Mediterranean, particularly 18th century Greek, Egyptian, and Roman cultures, through coursework that combines classical literature and inscriptions, seminars, narrative history, and skills classes.

In 2013, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Yale University in New Haven, CT in joint-top position with three other schools, on its list of best ancient history graduate programs. Graduates at the school are awarded a Master of Arts (M.A.) after they complete seven classes within the department. Additionally, Ph.D. students are awarded a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) before they complete their dissertation. Incoming students to the classics graduate program are expected to pursue continuing education by enrolling in a doctorate level program. Yale’s Department of Classics aims overall to produce original research on the life and times of ancient Romans and Greeks.
