Excellent archaeology graduate programs are available at Yale University and Columbia University, two of the nation’s best universities. Both East Coast schools offer archaeology graduate programs to train students for an array of cultural careers, including education. While a master’s degree program is available at Yale, both master’s and doctoral programs are offered at Columbia University; students may personalize the programs in conjunction with the university’s other departments.

Yale University in New Haven, CT
In 2011, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Yale University third on its list of best universities in the United States. Eight courses comprise the university’s master’s program in archaeological studies that include a graduate thesis. Students have to finish the program within three years. Students in Yale’s master’s program are prepared for various careers in cultural and education areas. Continuing education is also available at the school for various professionals including archeologists. Students are allowed to transfer course credits to schools offering Ph.D. programs in the field.
Columbia University in New York, NY
In 2011, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Columbia University fourth on its list of best universities in the United States. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) programs in Archaeology are available at Columbia University through its Department of Art History and Archaeology and Department of Anthropology. Ph.D. programs are also available to students with other departments at the school, including the Department of Classics, Department of History, and Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures. These various programs are coordinated by the Columbia Center for Archeology where internship, fieldwork, and research opportunities are offered for archaeology students.
