Schools Offering Management Information Systems Programs
Management information systems (MIS) professionals are responsible for the coordination of the use of information technology (IT) in completing a task or enhancing a business process. Candidates for some management positions may be required to have graduate level education in programs such as information systems design and IT management.
Interested individuals may also study MIS as part of the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program. Various publications have accorded multiple honors for two of the best master’s degree programs; in this article, we take a look at some of the best information systems and management graduate programs in the United States.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Cambridge, MA
Times Higher Education, a ranking publication from London, England, has accorded 9th rank to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in its 2009 list of the world’s top 200 universities. In 2010, the U.S. News & World Report named MIT the best business school in the United States for information systems.
A joint program leading to a Master of Science (M.S.) in System Design and Management is available through the MIT School of Engineering and MIT’s Sloan School of Management. The program provides education in the project management, engineering, and architecture of complex systems in a worldwide setting. Students take 13–18 months to complete a thesis, four electives, and 11 required courses; they take 24 months to complete a distance-learning format of the program.
The University of Texas (Austin) – Austin, TX
The University of Texas at Austin (UT), which attracts 11,000 applicants every year, is among the largest graduate schools in the United States. In 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine named the university the 25th best value in public colleges in the United States.
An information management concentration in the full-time M.B.A. program is available through the McCombs School of Business.
