Associate of Business (A.B.) Degree in Office Technology

The efficient and effective operation of a modern business depends on a variety of office technology. Qualified personnel who are adept at using telephone systems, fax machines, copiers, software programs and computers are needed by companies, among other things. Students enrolled in an associate’s degree program in business office technology are provided with the skills needed for entry-level occupations in office settings.

Associate Degree Program in Business Office Technology

Students enrolled in associate’s degree programs in business office technology are taught basic office skills such as general office procedures and telephone etiquette. They are also taught basic computer skills, along with receiving instruction about software programs such as spreadsheets and word processing. They are trained in the performance of database management or business record keeping and filing. They may also be trained in cashiering skills and customer service.

Students may be allowed to concentrate their studies on a specialized area, including as a medical or legal secretary. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma. They are also expected to be proficient in keyboarding, English and math.

Several professional organizations, such as the National Association of Legal Secretaries, Legal Secretaries Inc and the International Association of Administrative Professionals, offer certification options. For instance, the Accredited Legal Secretary credential, Certified Professional Secretary and Certified Administrative Professional credentials are available to eligible candidates.
