Majors Overview May 14, 2015

Get information about obtaining Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degrees through accelerated programs and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Accelerated Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) Programs

Students enrolled in Accelerated Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) programs get advanced instruction in global leadership, organizational behavior and management, as in a typical 2-year MBA program. However, a heavier curriculum features in accelerated MBA programs offered at various schools that include more concentrated studies to allow students to complete the degree program within 12-15 months.

As in traditional MBA programs, concentrations in numerous areas are offered through accelerated programs; these areas include marketing, human resources, healthcare, general management and accounting. Partially or fully online programs, apart from weekend and evening classes, are offered at many schools. A 5-year accelerated joint degree program is also available to those who wish to earn an MBA simultaneously with their bachelor’s degree. Joint MBA programs are also available along with doctoral, law and other master’s degree programs.

Education Requirements

While admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree, the upper-level courses can be combined in joint programs for application toward both program levels. Business experience, while not mandatory, could give applicants a competitive edge in the admission process while better preparing them for the fast-paced coursework. Those who opt for joint degree options need to seek admittance to both programs.

Coursework

Economics, accounting, law and management are in the program coursework, which depending on the chosen concentration, may include electives such as information technology, healthcare administration, or logistics.

Students learn problem-solving and critical thinking strategies to hone good communication skills. They also examine business practices outlining various economic systems and market conditions. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Corporate taxation
•Managerial finance
•Global management
•Teamwork and leadership
•Accounting
•Marketing strategies and concepts
•Organizational behavior
•Human resource management
•Cost accounting

Career Choices

Managerial and leadership expertise may be developed by graduates, qualifying them for management careers in various fields, including finance, healthcare and business. They may choose from popular job options such as:

•Economic consultant
•Supply chain manager
•Financial analyst
•Administrative services manager
•Healthcare administrator

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth of 12% has been predicted for administrative service managers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, these professionals brought in an average annual wage of $81,080 (BLS). During the same period, financial analysts earned $76,950 on average per annum and were expected to see a 16% job growth. Medical and health services managers, including healthcare administrators, with an average annual wage of $88,580, are expected to see a 23% job growth, over the 2012 – 2022 decade.

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of an accelerated MBA program may seek continued education by earning a doctoral degree in business administration. With a doctoral degree, these professionals can seek careers in research or academia at the university level. Graduate certificate programs may also allow students to reach specializations in business administration; these programs are a combination of coursework and opportunities of employment in a particular business field. The focus of certificate programs can be on labor relations, school law, contract bidding and human resource management.
