Degree Overview: Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree in Computer Engineering

Majors Overview December 8, 2013

Computer engineers play the role of designing and building laptop and PC systems and similar hardware, such as motherboards, processors, and chips. They also develop software, including databases, spreadsheets, and applications. Those interested in this field may start by entering a 2-year Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree program in computer engineering.

A.A. Programs in Computer Engineering

Students enrolled in an Associate in Science in Computer Engineering program are provided with the basic skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level jobs in the field of computer systems and technology, including occupations in computer software, hardware and general repair. Those who graduate from these programs may also seek to go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering. The associate’s degree program is devised to teach computer engineering students about the fundamentals of computer systems, in addition to circuitry, and system development.

Coursework

Coursework in computer engineering programs is devised to make enrolled students familiar with electronic resources, electrical energy and computer electrical systems. Students can also expect to become adept in subjects such as computer science, computer development and mathematics. Coursework related to an associate’s degree program in computer engineering could include topic areas such as:

•Composition of the English language
•Software and program design and development
•Civic communication
•Physical and social sciences
•Data configuration and programming languages
•Algebra and calculus

Job and Wage Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted a job growth rate of nine percent for computer hardware engineers during the period from 2010 to 2020. Computer software engineers are expected to enjoy a job growth rate of 30% during the same span.

In May 2009 BLS reports showed that the annual average pay for computer hardware engineers earned an average annual wage of $98,810. Computer software engineers with an application specialty averaged $87,900 per annum, while those with specialization in systems software took home average yearly earnings of $96,620.

Continuing Education Information

Those who successfully complete associate’s degree programs in computer engineering could opt to augment their educational training by earning a bachelor’s degree through a 4-year college or university. In some schools students are allowed to transfer credits earned in an associate degree program to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field of study.
