Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Computer Engineering and Electronics

Few schools, if any, offer computer electronics bachelor’s degree programs. Many offers electronics as a concentration within computer science options, or combined engineering degree and computer electronics programs. Incoming students study the principles of designing circuits, along with the modes of application of those designs to real computer systems. They also learn about ways of analyzing a variety of computer systems, including digital, microprocessor-based and analog. Finally, they learn how to build actual hardware systems through hands-on experiences.

The focus of bachelor’s degree programs is typically on business skills and project management, whereby students are trained to assume leadership roles. Communications training is also considered essential in most programs relevant to the field in which group collaborations and written reports are important. Some specialized programs aimed at graduates who are likely to work in international markets include a foreign language requirement.
Given the rapid changes in technology, training in technology literacy is incorporated in the coursework of many programs, whereby students are taught strategies relevant to the conduct of original research and helped stay abreast of relevant technology.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. The strongest applicants possess strong mechanical and math skills. Submission of a personal essay, letters of recommendation and SAT or ACT scores may also be expected.

Coursework combines laboratory training and classroom instruction. Students typically learn advanced mathematical skills and business theory in classroom lectures. They also learn about the building and integration of hardware in laboratory sessions. Over the 2010-2020 decade, job growth rates of 6% have been predicted for chemical engineers. During the same period, computer hardware engineers, and the engineering industry as a whole, are expected to see 9% and 11% growths, respectively (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, chemical engineers, including process engineers, brought home an average annual wage of $94,350. During that time, computer hardware engineers banked $100,920, on average (BLS).
