A.A. Programs in Mechanical Engineering Technology

Students enrolled in Associate’s degree programs in mechanical engineering technology are provided with practical engineering principles. Technical schools and community colleges are among the primary institutions that offer these two-year programs.

Graduates become adept at using CAD software packages to design prototypes and to assess the qualities of materials that are commonly used. Schools may augment coursework and labs with participation opportunities in cooperative education.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold GED certificates or high school diplomas. Students will benefit from having a strong high school background in science and math courses before enrolling in the associate program.

Coursework

Math and science courses are used to augment the general education coursework in Associate’s programs in mechanical engineering technology; such coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Fluid mechanics
•Technical drawing
•Mechanical design
•CAD (computer-aided design)
•Mechanics of materials

Career Choices

Graduates may offer assistance to engineers during projects while carrying out routine tasks including diagnostic tests and maintenance. The work done by mechanical engineering technicians may also involve estimation of plant space maintenance and labor costs (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). Their work may also include performance of research and production of technical writings or drawings. They may choose from various career choices such as:

•Laboratory technician
•Product designer
•Drafts person
•CAD operator
