Degree Overview: Associate in Electronics and Computer Technology

An associate degree program in computer and electronics technology will prepare students for entry-level employment in both the electronics industry and computer-related fields. Students will become knowledgeable in basic hardware, interfacing, and circuitry installation.

Associate Degree Program in Electronics and Computer Technology

Students enrolled in electronics and computer technology associate degree programs will be trained on the installation, setup, operation, maintenance and repair of network devices and equipment. Advanced topics in micro-processing and electronic industrial controls micro-processing are explored by students during their progress through the coursework. They gain familiarity with the electronics in mainframe and traditional personal computers employed in industrial systems. Their work may also involve electronics employed in microcomputers that can be found in virtually everything, including small and large appliances, airplanes and cars. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Program Coursework

The two-year associate degree program combines hands-on practical experience with classroom lecture on hardware repair, software installation, and computer programming. Students are required to complete general coursework that may include classes in liberal arts, history, English, science, and math. Additional practical experience will be gained through internship experiences. Program course topics may include the following:

•Microcomputer hardware
•Digital circuits
•Electronic drafting

Career Options

Students who have earned their associate’s degree are qualified for entry-level positions in technology-related fields. Since electronics and computers are used in nearly every industry, including digital media, toys, hospital and hospital equipment, government, aerospace, and automotive, graduates may work across diverse settings according to personal interests. Graduates may obtain the following job titles:

•Commercial electronics technician
•Systems support specialist
•Field service technician

Continuing Education Information

Organizations such as Microsoft, Cisco and CompTIA offer professional certification that professionals can obtain and improve their credentials. Associate degree program graduates can also seek continued education by earning a bachelor’s degree in electronics and computer technology or in a related field such as computer programming, electrical engineering or computer science.
