Associate’s degree programs in Internet multimedia and design is offered by several schools with broad names used to describe programs, and the coursework includes visual communications, web/multimedia design, and web design and development, among other related areas. Students are provided the knowledge and skills needed to create web pages that combine video clips, animations and 3-D images. Areas of multimedia development and design include website design, video gaming, and video production. Admission criteria usually require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Visual and computer design principles are integral to the curricula in multimedia design programs. Students will learn how to combine different media forms, including graphics, images, and sound, and they gain proficiency with different computer software applications. In May 2010, the number of professionals employed in the United States was 26,560; they earned an average annual salary of $63,440.
