Majors Overview February 19, 2015

Bachelor of Information Technology (B.I.T.) degree programs will teach students how to manage information and solve and recognize problems with the help of technology. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs in Information Technology are similar to B.I.T. programs, but are more general.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Information Technology

Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in information technology are provided with the skills to facilitate the use of technology in the workplace; they can seek entry-level careers related to web interfaces, programming, databases, or networks.

Some schools offer specializations or areas of emphasis within the degree. These include network and system administration, software development, business, ecommerce, or information security.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework within an Information Technology B.S. degree program covers general education classes devised to expand upon written and oral communication as well as critical thinking skills. Core courses may include the following topic areas:

•Management of databases

A job growth rate of 15% has been predicted for computer and information systems managers over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Over the same period, software developers are expected to enjoy job growth of 22%, while computer systems analysts should witness a 25% increase. In May 2012, information systems managers took home an average annual wage of $120,950, while systems analysts and systems software developers banked $79,680 and $99,000 respectively.

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates from the bachelor’s program can seek continuing education by earning a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree with a technology focus. Particular vendors offer certifications that can help interested individuals to showcase their skills and knowledge of the software products or technologies needed by the industry or employer.
