Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Architectural Building Engineering Technology

Majors Overview November 9, 2014

A combination of the technical and aesthetic aspects of building design is featured in architectural building engineering technology programs. Students in bachelor’s degree programs in this field will be prepared for careers as building or architectural engineering technicians.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Architectural Building Engineering Technology

The art of designing buildings, the technical aspects of construction, and the rudiments of engineering are merged in bachelor’s degree programs in architectural building engineering technology. Students enrolled in the program are taught architectural drafting with the use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems included in the curriculum, which combines courses in building design, construction site observation, and laboratory tests. Typically, universities, colleges, and technical schools offer these four-year programs.

Admission criteria generally require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

General education courses are augmented with core courses in building technology and design. Skills in demolition, real estate inspection, municipal planning, and project management can be gained by students.

Hands-on laboratory time is included in some programs; these are focused on the application of engineering principles and aimed at preparing students for production and design work. Courses in math, engineering, and physics might also be taken by students. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Engineering economy
•Structural analysis
•Construction law
•Site engineering and planning
•Architecture design

Career Choices

Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in architectural building engineering technology are trained to be able to seek employment in the construction industry in design and support roles. Graduates in assistant or technician positions work closely with engineers and architects, whose primary focus is on structural, mechanical, or electrical engineering.

Numerous types of companies and firms offer these jobs, including:

•Architectural firms
•Construction companies
•Engineering offices
•Governmental agencies
•Contractor’s offices

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth rate of 20% has been predicted for civil engineers over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2012, these professionals earned an average annual wage of $79,340 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Those that successfully complete the four-year program in architectural building engineering technology can join the workforce immediately or seek continued education by earning a master’s or doctoral degree in architectural engineering.

Schools offer a professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program to serve the needs of aspiring architects; state licensure requirements for the occupation are typically met by the program. Students enrolled in PhD programs can obtain employment involving research of safer and more sustainable architectural materials and practices; alternatively, they may seek careers in academia.
