Earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree in Architecture

Majors Overview April 16, 2014

Those who take a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program in Architecture will be prepared for entry-level jobs in the architecture field. This program will also help students prepare for a professional degree needed for certification and licensure as an architect.

B.A. Programs in Architecture

Students enrolled in the pre-professional Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program in Architecture are taught a conceptual and creative approach to design, thereby providing them with a broad, rudimentary understanding of the architectural field. Students enrolled in some programs are allowed to choose a concentration area or specialization within the major, such as architectural representation or building performance. Most programs teach students about applied sciences in building, architectural theories and design techniques. A BA in Architecture is not recognized as a professional degree by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). However, graduates can use this type of program as preparation for pursuing continued education onto an NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree.

Admission criteria in a bachelor’s degree program in architecture typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

The 4-year coursework helps hone students’ problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, in addition to helping them complete general education prerequisite courses. Coursework may include topic areas such as:

•History of architecture
•Modern and environmental design
•Structural concepts
•Architectural design
•Construction methods

Career Choices

Graduates of an NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program can aspire to become licensed architects; however, state licensure is not available to graduates with only a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Architecture, who must satisfy themselves with entry-level jobs in architectural and related industries. They can choose from possible job titles such as:

•Architectural historian
•Industrial designer
•Technical illustrator
•Building researcher

Continuing Education Choices

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program in Architecture are supplied a solid base to build a career in architecture. Those who seek professional occupations must pursue continued education by earning a Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree. Doctor of Architecture (D.Arch.) programs are also accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.
