Higher Education Articles April 1, 2013

Architects design the spaces and buildings that people use on a regular basis by using specialized drafting, art, and math skills. Architects who live in Michigan must earn a minimum of an undergraduate degree and meet specific guidelines established by the Michigan Board of Architects, which oversees over five thousand licensed architects as of 2010. Students can earn their doctoral, master, or bachelor degree in architecture at the University of Michigan. Students can pursue a specialized degree in landscape architecture at Michigan State University.

Architecture Programs at Michigan State University

Michigan State University, located in East Lansing, Michigan, serves over thirty-five thousand undergraduate students every year through seventy-two programs. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from the School of Planning, Design, and Construction.

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture

Students who are enrolled into this degree program are introduced to landscape architecture by learning about problem solving and environmental issues to start their studies. Then, they proceed to advanced courses such as regional environmental design that covers environmental modeling, visual quality, and spatial identity. Students complete medium-scale projects that balance design requirements with existing infrastructure and community needs along with exploring design solutions for complex problems in two community project design courses.

Upon graduation or during their final year, students who are majoring in landscape architecture will need to complete a professional internship that allows them to discover work procedures and business ethics within a landscape architecture firm. In order to graduate, students need to attend research seminars that focus on contemporary issues in landscape architecture.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Architecture

Students will be able to enter in an undergraduate architecture program during their junior year at the University of Michigan once they have completed a series of pre-architecture courses. Students are required to complete two courses in studio drawing during their pre-architecture program; as recommended, they should take two courses in architectural history. Individuals will utilize small-scale studio projects to discover interaction with the build environment when prerequisite courses are completed. Students will gain a strong understanding in general principles of environmental technology and architectural structures. The degree program is non-professional and offers a basis for an individual’s continued study of architecture.

Master of Architecture (M.Arch.)

While a two-year condensed master’s degree program can be completed by students who hold a bachelor’s degree in architecture, those who have a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field have to complete a three-year program. Students of both tracks have to complete a thesis project. All individuals are required to complete site planning courses, design studio courses, and studies which explore the relationships between representation, drawing, and the intent in architecture.

Ph.D. in Architecture

The architecture doctoral program is designed for individuals who want to advance their professional skills or teach architecture at the postsecondary level. Candidates in the doctoral program can specialize in three areas: design studies, building technologies, and theory and history. The doctoral degree is offered at the University of Michigan’s Rackham Graduate School.
