Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree Programs in Interior Design
Students enrolled in associate’s degree programs in Interior Design examine ways of optimizing space usage for aesthetics and function in commercial and residential buildings. They examine furniture arrangement, colors, contrast, and textures. They learn to understand blueprints and to work with architects during renovation or construction. Students will become adept at analyzing client needs and devising innovative choices by employing computer-aided design software. Specializations are offered in kitchen and bath design by some programs.
Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework in some programs includes work experience; students are given the opportunity to design living spaces and build a resume before they graduate. Schools sponsor trips in which students are given the chance to study how interior design is applied in real-world settings. Participation in community service is also encouraged through some programs whereby the students can gain hands-on practice. General education courses must typically be completed by students before they graduate. Coursework may commonly include topic areas such as:
•Lighting and color

•Textiles
•Non-residential design
•3-D imaging
•Drawing

Those who successfully complete the program can expect to have the business and aesthetic knowledge needed for entry-level occupations in home furnishing stores, architectural firms, or design firms. They may choose from various job titles such as:

•Kitchen design consultant
Continuing Education and Licensure Choices
Participation by graduates in work experience programs or internships will qualify them to take the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s Associate Kitchen and Bath Design Exam. To stay abreast of the latest advances in decorating and design, individuals may enroll in interior design certificate programs. The bachelor’s degree program in Interior Design is best suited for those aspiring to work as licensed interior designers. Passage of a qualifying exam augmented by six years of combined experience and education will qualify an interior designer for licensure.
