Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Information Technology

Majors Overview September 2, 2014

Students will be taught the basics of computer technology in Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B.S.I.T.) degree programs. Those that graduate from these programs will gain the skills needed for careers as programmers and developers in corporations that depend on the Web and IT (information technology).

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Information Technology

Students enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B.S.I.T.) degree programs learn about computer programming and how to create websites and manage databases. Coursework is devised to teach students about developing user-friendly computer systems with a primary focus on network or database management. Given the link between information technology and the Internet, the program also teaches about creating or managing content on websites.

Admission criteria within these four-year programs typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework in information technology degree programs is devised to teach students the rudiments of computer systems and programming. Core coursework may usually include the following topic areas:

•Statistics
•Web development
•Operating systems
•Data analysis
•Java programming
•Database programming
•Network security
•Web design

Career Choices

Those that successfully complete the program may seek occupations as analysts, designers, or developers in the IT field. During the performance of their work duties, these experts may have to provide quality customer service or manage voluminous data related to computer systems, among other things.

Some experts may have to engage in the analysis of system performance and any problems that may arise. They may also be required to deliver networks that are safe and secure in keeping with customers’ demands. They usually seek the following careers:

•Network and computer systems administrator
•Network architect
•Database administrator
•Computer security specialist

Job and Wage Outlook

Driven by a burgeoning demand for data collection and security, a 31% job growth rate has been predicted for database administrators over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Over the same period, network and computer systems administrators are expected to see a 28% increase, while security analysts and network architects are likely to witness growth of 22%.

In May 2012, database administrators took home an average annual wage of $77,080. Corresponding average annual wage packets of $72,560 and $86,170 were banked by network and computer systems administrators and information security analysts (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of the bachelor’s degree program can opt for continued education by earning a master’s or Ph.D. degree in the field. Coursework in a master’s degree program is devised to impart advanced knowledge on web design and other information technology concepts. It can also ensure the development of managerial skills in IT projects or data management.

Those interested in information technology research careers may benefit from completing doctoral degree programs. They may be required to publish journal articles or papers with faculty members, in addition to studying coursework in interdisciplinary subject areas that impact the IT field.
