Bachelor of Information Technology (B.I.T.) Degree Programs

Students enrolled in these undergraduate programs can benefit through the establishment of a sturdy knowledge base in general IT concepts, such as the structure of networks, operating systems, and programming languages.

Students can choose a program specialization in one of several areas, such as multimedia technologies, web development, or cyber security. Exploration in research and theories of server administration, firewall architecture, and information security can be done by those specializing in cyber security.

Over the program tenure, students can develop a thorough understanding about the interaction of users with software and interfaces and about the effective securing of data through a collaborative effort. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma, in addition to meeting other academic enrollment standards of the postsecondary institution.

Coursework

Apart from general education classes and major coursework, industry certification through specific vendors can also be offered to students enrolled in the program. Classroom instruction may include the following subject areas:

Graduates of the bachelor’s degree program can seek numerous entry-level careers in the industry, in positions such as:

Job and Wage Outlook

A 22% job growth rate has been predicted for information security analysis professionals over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). During the same decade, network administrator and software development professionals are expected to enjoy respective job growth rates of 28% and 30%.

In May 2012, information security analysts banked an average annual wage of $86,170, while network administrators took home $76,320 (BLS). In 2012, the average annual wage of software engineers involved in the development of applications was $87,900, and those working in systems took home an average annual wage of $96,620.

Continuing Education Choices

Bachelor’s degree graduates can seek continuing education by earning master’s and doctorate degrees in information technology. The focus of graduate-level coursework is on research that will prepare candidates for high-level positions in the field.
