Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Network and Communication Management

Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in network and communication management learn about the design, installation, security, and overseeing of networks through a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on instruction. Schools offer these degree programs in several formats, including a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Communications Networks and Security or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Network Management.

Concentrations in areas such as enterprise computing, database management, and information systems security are offered by some programs. Colleges and technical schools typically offer these four-year programs, which are also offered online by some schools. Applicants must have a high school diploma or a GED to enroll.

Coursework

Coursework within a bachelor’s degree program in network and communication management covers networks, both current and evolving, through which visual, data, and voice messages can be effectively communicated. Apart from general education requirements, coursework includes topic areas such as:

•Wireless services and technology
•Cryptography
•Network security
•Telecommunications

Job and Wage Outlook

Graduates from the program can seek jobs in many companies, given that most companies use communication and computer networks for transmitting and storing information. They can also implement network solutions to determine how these companies store their data. They can seek job positions such as:

•Internet administrator
•Database administrator
•Network technical support
•Data communication analysts
•Network security specialist

A job growth rate of 12% has been predicted for network and computer systems administrators over the 2012 – 2022 decade. Database administrators are expected to enjoy a job growth rate of 15% during the same period (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2012, network administrators took home an average annual wage of $76,320, while database administrators earned $79,120 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates from the bachelor’s degree program in network communications and management may want to join the workforce immediately; alternatively, they may pursue a master’s degree in the field. These graduate programs often offer concentrations in areas of technology; these may include information security, network applications, and ecommerce. A telecommunications capstone may be required of students, wherein they implement a business plan to a real-world environment. Some schools may offer master’s degree programs as dual-degree choices; students enrolled in these programs are allowed to apply graduate credits to both graduate and undergraduate degree programs.
