Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Sound Recording Technology

Majors Overview February 12, 2015

Those with an interest in both music and electronics can pursue a sound recording technology degree. Students in the bachelor’s degree program will learn how to use their skills in the entertainment and music industries and how to record, edit, and mix digital music and audio tracks.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Sound Recording Technology

Students seeking admission to small and competitive bachelor’s degree programs in sound recording technology must first seek admittance to a college of their choice and gain acceptance into the school of music by giving an audition.

An aptitude for technology, musical talent, and a history of good academic standing are required by incoming students. Coursework of a sound technology recording program emphasizes participation in internships, whereby the student can benefit from networking opportunities and real-world experience in a competitive field.

Education Requirements

High school level computer science, math, and science courses are required for incoming students. They would also benefit from taking private lessons in their chosen instrument or voice, allowing them to become proficient ahead of the required audition. Students also need to hone an above-average sense of hearing as demonstration of excellent audio aptitude that is crucial to getting admitted into the sound recording technology program.

Coursework

Apart from basic education classes, including physics and calculus, coursework in sound recording technology majors includes completion of music classes, such as vocal/instrument performance, musicianship, and music theory. In most programs, students may participate in numerous classes, including:

•Music composition
•Mixing and mastering
•Fundamentals of electronics
•Recording techniques
•Audio technology
•Digital recording and editing
•Electronic and digital music composition
•Sound dynamics

Career Choices

Those that successfully complete a sound recording technology program may seek entry-level careers in the video game, music, television, or movie industries. Apart from seeking jobs with a company, they may pursue freelance careers. They can choose from various entry-level positions, such as:

•Music producer
•Sound engineer
•Recording studio technician
•Recording engineer
•Video game audio engineer

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth of nine percent has been predicted for sound engineering technicians over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics); the low projection is owed to the consolidation of TV and radio companies, in addition to high levels of competition. In May 2012, these professionals took home an average annual wage of $41,200.

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of the bachelor’s degree programs may seek continuing education by earning a master’s degree, whereby they can gain a firm grasp of sound recording technology. The focus of graduate programs is mainly on experimental and current technologies in sound recording, production, and audio. The students of a master’s degree in sound recording technology can also seek postsecondary-level teaching jobs.
