Majors Overview February 13, 2015

Those who want to learn how to report or broadcast sports should look into bachelor’s degree programs in sports journalism. Graduates of these four-year programs will be able to enter the sports journalism field.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Sports Journalism

Students enrolled in sports journalism bachelor’s degree programs are taught journalistic principles pertinent to amateur and professional sports. Both print journalism and broadcast journalism are incorporated in the majority of sports journalism programs. However, separate programs are offered by some schools with a focus on each area separately.

Schools typically don’t have any educational prerequisites for bachelor’s degree programs in sports journalism; however, students enrolled at some universities are expected to complete some journalism classes before they are formally admitted into the program.

In the majority of instances, students don’t need a sports journalism internship before they can graduate from a bachelor’s degree program. Coursework may include the following topic areas:

•Legal issues in sports

•News reporting
•Public speaking

Job and Wage Outlook

In May 2012, correspondents and reporters, including sports journalists, banked an average annual wage of $37,090 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). A negative job growth rate of 13% has been predicted for the field over the 2012 – 2022 decade (BLS). This bleak projection is owed to the expected continual decrease in the numbers of newspaper readers and television viewers.

Continuing Education Choices

Those that successfully complete bachelor’s degree programs in sports journalism can seek occupations in electronic, broadcast, or print sports journalism. Few schools offer master’s-level programs in sports journalism, although these could be offered in the future, with at least one school beginning to develop such a program in 2010. Students that wish to pursue continuing education can earn master’s degrees in general journalism even though the coursework does not have a specific focus on sports.
