Majors Overview September 1, 2014

These four-year programs may lead to professional settings in which information technology is used.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Technology Management

Students enrolled in this program typically learn about leading, organizing, and controlling factors within organizational environments. This is usually an interdisciplinary type of degree program with a focus on technology management within the contexts of IT and business. Students that complete the program can expect to become effective decision makers and good communicators within a business setting.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. Often, students may be required to hold a prior associate’s degree in a professional or technical field before being allowed to enroll. Sometimes a certain amount of relevant work experience may be expected of prospective students; alternatively, students may be required to augment work experience with prior education before they are admitted.

Coursework

Coursework within the degree program is devised to teach students financial analysis and communication skills in addition to strategic management principles and the use of rudimentary accounting methods. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Financial accounting
•Marketing in technology management
•Ethics of business
•Finance
•Technical communication
•Organizational behavior management

Job and Wage Outlook

A 15% job growth rate has been predicted for computer and information systems managers over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Many of these experts augment a bachelor’s degree with approximately five years of IT experience. In May 2012, computer and information systems managers took home an average annual wage of $120,950.

Continuing Education Choices

After they successfully complete a bachelor’s degree program, graduates can opt for continued education by earning advanced degrees in technology management or any other field that’s closely related. They could seek a Master of Science (M.S.) in Healthcare Technologies Management, M.S. in Technology Management, or master’s degree in engineering and technology management.
