Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B.S.I.T.) Degree in Computer Networking and Security

Majors Overview September 2, 2014

Although Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B.S.I.T.) degree programs in CIS (Computer Information Systems) are not usually offered, they can be found as Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs. CIS programs teach students how to utilize and understand technology for the purpose of solving commercial business issues. These programs may be found within traditional or business-focused computer science program areas and usually last four years.

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B.S.I.T.) Degree Programs in Computer Networking and Security

Few schools, if any, offer degree programs specifically in information technology (IT) with a networking and security focus; however, interested individuals can find relevant coursework within bachelor’s degree programs, such as computer science with a networking focus and information and network technologies with security systems focuses.

Students can generally complete such programs within four years; thereafter, seek occupations in various related settings. Coursework covers topic areas such as security concepts, advanced server administration, and storage area networks. There is an emphasis on interpersonal, business, and problem-solving skills.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework combines theoretical and hands-on instruction to teach students about security strategies and about designing and evaluating secure computer networks. Coursework may commonly include the following topic areas:

•Principle of system security
•Network infrastructure
•Basic concepts in networking
•Computer forensics
•Database server administration

Career Choices

IT experts can seek jobs with numerous organizations that have a reliance on such technology for their successful operations. These professionals can aim for these career options:

•Compliance consultant
•Network architect
•Systems analyst
•Database administrator
•Network security analyst

Job and Wage Outlook

A 22% job growth rate has been predicted for web developers, network architects, and information security analysts over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, information security analysts took home an average annual wage of $86,170; meanwhile, computer network architects banked $91,000 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

While many information technology experts seek jobs immediately upon completion of a bachelor’s degree program, some opt for continued education by earning a master’s degree in a related field. While a bachelor’s degree is considered adequate preparation for many occupations, employers for some positions such as information security analysts or network architects prefer candidates that are master’s degree graduates (BLS). Obtaining expertise and experience in the field would benefit individuals that seek upper-level positions with higher pay.
