Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) Programs in Finance and Governance

Students enrolled in a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Finance degree program learn about governance (the laws and mechanisms used to regulate the actions of a company) and how it affects organizations.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school, apart from having acceptable scores on the GMAT or GRE. In some programs, applicants are required to hold an undergraduate degree in economics, business, or a subject such as engineering or math. Previous completion in some graduate-level coursework may be an expectation for students seeking admittance to a 1-year program.

Coursework

Coursework usually begins with general finance classes, succeeded in turn by theory courses like macroeconomics and practical courses like investment management. Graduates complete courses in areas such as venture capital, accounting, and real estate to prepare themselves for examination of a variety of ways to achieve corporate restructuring, including hostile takeovers, acquisitions and mergers, and the ways in which the company’s value is affected by them. Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth rate of 9% has been predicted for financial managers. Over the same period, top executives, including chief financial officers are expected to see 11% growth (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, financial managers brought in an average annual wage of $109,740, while, in January 2014, chief financial officers earned $180,700 on average per annum.

Professional Certification and Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates can pursue continued education by earning Ph.D. degrees in Finance. Additionally, they can arm themselves with knowledge by enrolling in executive education programs offered by the university schools of business, as well as graduate certificate programs. The Association for Financial Professionals offers the Certified Treasury Professional credential for individuals with a graduate degree. Likewise, the CFA Institute offers the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
