Graduates from an Operations Management MBA program can expect to become adept at troubleshooting and developing solutions to logistical and supply chain problems. They will also develop a multidisciplinary knowledge base with skills from the marketing, statistics and finance fields. The curriculum often includes hands-on projects or field experiences. Students usually complete Operations Management MBA programs within two years of full-time studies, though schools usually also offer a part-time study option. Both online and on-campus courses are also available at some schools.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree, and, at some schools, to be proficient in mathematics and language before they enroll. Applicant students who have successfully completed coursework in English, algebra, statistics, and accounting may be preferred.

Program coursework teaches students about applying leadership, research, communication and analytical skills to business logistics. Apart from courses comprising the general core curriculum of an MBA program, a series of courses specific to their area of specialization must be completed by students.

Students can expect to gain expertise in the coordination of service and product delivery processes, evaluation of a company’s asset capacity and creation of corporate investment strategies. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Service operations management
•Resource planning
•Supply chain management
•Operations strategy
•Process management

Career Choices

Graduates from an MBA degree program with a concentration in operations management gain the knowledge and training they would need for careers in service procedures, supply chain management, and production operations. They may seek professional roles including:

•Operations analyst
•Management consultant
•Operations manager
•Supply chain manager

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth rate of 12% has been predicted for general and operations managers. Over the same period, management analysts are expected to see job growth of 19% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2014, general and operations managers brought in an average annual wage of $117,200, while management analysts earned $90,860 on average per annum (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates may seek continued education through participation in professional certificate programs, among other advanced training programs devised to arm students with the knowledge of changing practices and technology in the field. Others may seek a Ph.D. degree in Operations Management that they can integrate with a related subject such as supply chain management in order to pursue careers in research and academia.
