Degree Overview: Master of Education (M.Ed.) Degree in Elementary Education Curriculum

Majors Overview July 30, 2015

This article talks about Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree programs in Elementary Education Curriculum and their educational requirements, coursework, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) Programs in Elementary Education Curriculum

Students interested in children’s instructional theories and methodologies could benefit from enrolling into a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Elementary Education Curriculum program. These individuals could include recent undergraduates wishing to pursue a graduate degree, as well as current, licensed teachers at various grade levels (including elementary).

Students learn about elementary education standards, curriculum development, and teaching performance. Apart from the teaching coursework, students are also taught about the variations of abilities, developmental levels, and skills of children. Schools often require completion of field experience in the form of student teaching.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree including many courses in education. Additionally, students may need to submit Graduate Record Exam scores and letters of recommendation and have prior teaching experience. Some programs only admit those currently working as elementary teachers.

Coursework

Apart from the foundation and general education topics, program coursework typically includes research projects. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Education technology
•Education research methods
•Teaching skills
•Curriculum development
•Educational psychology
•Teaching ethics and laws
•Education Trends
•Instructional strategies
•Human development

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth of twelve percent has been predicted for elementary teachers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). A better employment outlook is available to teachers who are bilingual or have other special skills. In May 2012, elementary teachers brought in an average annual wage of $53,090.

Continuing Education Choices

Licensure is compulsory for teachers in a public school system. Licensure may be obtained by meeting state requirements. Passage of several exams and completion of a bachelor’s degree are among common requirements. In many states, license holders can maintain licensure by meeting continuing education standards.
