Master’s Degree Program in Taxation Overview

Coursework in a Master in Taxation program is most similar to that of a Master of Science (M.S.) in Taxation program. Enrolled students in both programs can expect to become adept in filing tax returns, assisting tax auditors, working with revenue authorities, and advising both clients and employers on the nature of tax decisions they should make.

Although accounting professionals with related bachelor’s degrees may commonly choose to enroll in these programs, even attorneys may benefit from earning this degree. Some programs are devised to assist those who want to gain a background in tax accounting and tax law.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria in some Master of Science (M.S.) in Taxation programs and Master of Taxation programs require incoming students to hold an undergraduate degree in business with a concentration in accounting. Another major may be mandatory for admission to some other programs, along with the completion of courses in microeconomics, management, finance, and financial accounting.

Students may need to demonstrate a proficiency in calculus at an early stage of the program. Minimum undergraduate GPA requirements may also need to be met.

Coursework

Coursework in a master’s degree program in taxation is devised to help professionals become adept at making decisions about numerous taxes, including income, gift, and estate taxes. Apart from honing their planning and advanced tax practice skills, students are taught about conducting legal research and evaluating business or personal situations to accomplish tax planning.

The focus of the coursework is on government policy, regulatory compliance, return preparation, and tax law. Students are guided through the process of tax liability minimization, representation of clients during audits, and the conduct of tax research. Core coursework may include topic areas such as the following:

•Property taxes
•Employment taxation
•International taxes
•Tax planning
•Taxation of partnerships and corporations
•Estate planning
•Tax procedures

Job and Wage Outlook

A bachelor’s degree may suffice to pursue careers as accountants and auditors. However, a master’s degree is usually needed for specialized, senior, and management positions, such as a Master of Taxation or a Master of Science (M.S.) in Taxation.

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a 13% job growth has been predicted for accountants and auditors (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The projected growth is attributed to an increased number of financial regulations. In May 2012, accountants and auditors brought in an average annual wage of $63,550. Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, lawyers are expected to see job growth of 10%; in May 2012, the average annual wage earned by all types of lawyers was $113,530.
