Earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in eCommerce

Majors Overview May 2, 2014

Students will be provided with a general foundation in electronic commerce’s technology and business fundamentals with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in eCommerce. In order to utilize technology in business management and everyday decision-making, an in-depth knowledge of business information systems at an advanced technical level is required by many careers in today’s technology-centric business environment.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in eCommerce

Students enrolled in Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs in eCommerce complete coursework focused on various business fundamentals, including business operations and marketing. There is a variation among different programs in the technology component; however, programs typically emphasize networking, database management systems, information management, and Internet and Web applications. Students need strong analytical skills and accordingly the focus of programs is on developing skills in various business management areas, including project management and communications.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Core business topic areas are included in the coursework; these include statistics, programming, economics and accounting. Practicum and internship experiences are included in some programs, whereby students gain hands-on training in the field. The focus of technical coursework is on trending issues and current technologies pertinent to eCommerce in a global business setting. Coursework may commonly include topic areas such as:

•Information systems management
•Computer science
•Computer networks
•Web publishing
•Internet applications

Career Choices

Graduates can choose from numerous career options with conventional companies looking to hire employees who possess technical skills relevant to roles in traditionally non-technical companies. These include entry-level occupations in business operations, financial management and marketing.

They can also leverage eCommerce to seek many entry-level career options in technical roles that require designing, programming, deploying and providing support to businesses via Internet- and Web-based systems. They can choose from career options such as:

•Internet communications specialist
•Online marketing specialist
•Web administrator
•Product designer

Job and Wage Outlook

A faster-than-average job growth rate of 22% has been predicted for computer system architects, web developers and information security analysts over the 2010 to 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The high growth rate for Web developers, including Webmasters, web designers and programmers, is attributed to an expected continual expansion in the eCommerce industry. In May 2012, these workers took home an average annual wage of $66,100.

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of the program can seek continued education by earning an MBA with a concentration in information systems or management, and thereby increase their management opportunities and career choices. Applicants with an MBA may be preferred by some employers of network architects or database administrators due to additional training provided in the management, systems design and electronic business (BLS).
