Public relations professionals utilize communications and marketing strategies to promote individuals, products, brands, and businesses. Students who are interested in enrolling in an associate degree program should consider an Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Communication with a concentration on public relation.

Associate of Arts in Communication

A majority of public relations professionals are required at a minimum to hold a bachelor degree in public relations or communications. However, individuals who are interested in completing an associate degree program in public relations may transfer credits earned to a four-year bachelor degree program to gain the academic background needed.

Students will gain a basic understanding of writing, marketing, and mass communications through the associate degree program in communications. Students will learn how to analyze different types of mass media, such as radio broadcasts, news broadcasts, and advertisements. Individuals will examine several effective ways of passing along public relations message and information using different media sources.

Education Requirements

The majority of associate degree program in public relations or communications are created to provide students with a basic educational background and liberal arts. Students are required to have earned a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma, including a minimum of four years of high school level English courses to enroll into these degree programs.

Program Course Topics

Most courses in an associate degree program in public relations and communications cover basic educational courses, such as social science, communications, history, and English. Some core classes may include:

•Desktop publishing introduction
•Print journalism
•Humanities through the arts
•Writing for media
•Composition
•Mass communication
•Principles of speech

Career Options

An associate degree program in communications and public relations is not enough of an educational background for individuals who want to obtain a position in PR. Students who have completed an associate degree program in public relations may transfer to a bachelor degree program, then transition into the following positions:

•Copywriter
•Sales and marketing manager
•PR manager
•Public relations sales associate
•PR account associate

Continuing Education

Students enrolled in an associate degree program in public relations are provided with the educational credits they need in order to seek admission to a bachelor degree program in journalism, graphic design, public relations, marketing, communications, or advertising. Individuals who aspire to perform supervisory roles in the media industry may advance onto a master degree program in these subject areas.
