Students develop logic and problem solving skills to ensure the linking of database structures with data elements. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

Concepts in computer programming and statistics are also explored, in addition to database design and Web applications. An internship may be required as well. Core coursework covers topic areas such as:

•Web design
•Systems analysis and design
•Wireless communication
•Data modeling
•Computer architecture

Career Choices

Graduates can expect to become adept at installing new products, managing data systems, coordinating database development, and writing code for consulting, private sector, or government organizations. Their responsibilities include the setting of user permissions aimed at allowing data access as the chief concern relates to data security. Students that specialized in data management or administration can seek job titles such as database developers, database analysts, and database administrators.

Job and Wage Outlook

A faster-than-average 15% job growth rate has been predicted for database administrators over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). In May 2012, these professionals took home an average annual wage of $77,080, with wages ranging between $42,930 and $118,720 (BLS).

Continuing Education Information

While individuals with graduate degrees are preferred by employers, experience and on-the-job training are also valued. Bachelor’s degree holders may want to enroll in certification or academic courses to keep abreast of rapid technological advancements in the field.

Employers expect database administrators to complete certification programs, whereby they may demonstrate their proficiency in computer programs or languages. Data Management International offers the Certified Data Management Professional, an international credential that can be obtained through passage of a series of exams by a candidate with a bachelor’s degree and work experience. Students can also pursue continuing education by enrolling in a master’s degree program in information technology.
