Overview of Associate Degree Program in Agribusiness

Agricultural business, also known as agribusiness, deals with the distribution and processing of farm commodities, as well as operations of a farm. An agribusiness associate degree program is designed for students who want to work in agricultural equipment sales, farm management, agricultural production or a related field.

Agribusiness Associate Degree Program

Agribusiness associate degree program combines technical agricultural studies with commerce. Along with the basic program in agribusiness, some colleges and universities allow students to select specializations in areas such as livestock or crop production, food technology, or horticulture. Students will develop skills and knowledge in agricultural marketing, sales, and management through the two-year associate degree programs. Students will gain knowledge in key technology and management concepts needed for the farming industry.

Students may earn an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), Associate of Science (A.S.), or Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree. Depending on the schools, they may collaborate with four-year universities and allow students to transfer credits earned from an associate degree program to the bachelor degree program. Some colleges and universities may offer online courses, and require students to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or high school diploma before being admitted into the program.

Program Coursework

In addition to major courses, students are required to complete basic educational requirements. Agribusiness courses emphasizes on farm management as well as a scattering of marketing, finance, and economics. Depending on the programs, it might include an internship with a local business where students can gain hands-on experience in the field of agricultural business. Course topics may include:

•Animal science

Career Options

Students who have graduated from an associate degree program in agribusiness will acquire skills in agriculture, finance, and business management that can be used for careers with small farms, government organizations, or commercial businesses. Potential job titles in this field include the following:

•Agricultural supply store manager
•Farm owner
•Agronomy technician
•Farm machinery salesperson

Individuals who have graduated from an agribusiness associate degree program can pursue a bachelor degree program in agricultural business management. Students may select an area of specialization, such as basic farming management or horticulture in this four-year degree program. Students who want to advance their studies may also pursue a master degree program in agribusiness.
