Associate Degree Program in Computer Office Technology

Schools offer associate degree programs in this field in various formats, such as computer applications and office technology programs, computer information technology or office technology programs with optional administrative assistant majors. Students enrolled in these programs are provided with the abilities and skills needed to work in office environments that require knowledge of computer software.

They become adept in areas such as priority management, business law fundamentals, keyboarding word processing, accounting and data entry, management information systems and integrated office software. Graduates become adept at the interpersonal, communication and software troubleshooting skills needed to function effectively in business office environments. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

From 2008 to 2018, administrative assistants and secretaries in general were expected an eleven percent growth in employment, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS – During 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that secretaries working outside of executive, legal, and medical specializations earned an average annual salary of $30,830. According to the BLS, from 2008 to 2018, executive administrative assistants employment outlook were expected to increase by thirteen percent, and in May 2010, these professionals earned an average annual salary of $43,520.

Certification and Continuing Education Information

Upon completion of the program, graduates can seek entry level jobs or choose to continue their education through certifications and additional training. Professional certifications offered by most agencies, along with work experience influence advancements in this field. Certifications are offered by organizations such as the Legal Secretaries International Inc, the National Association of Legal Secretaries (NALS), International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA) and the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). Interested candidates are required to pass examinations to qualify for certification. With further training, office assistants employed in the legal field can occupy paralegal positions.
