What will I learn in a Computer Information Systems Program?

Students will be prepared for a variety of computer-related positions when taking an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree program in computer information systems. The programs may cover the field of computer information systems broadly or may focus on a subject, such as software applications or computer support. Graduates can continue educations to a four-year program or go find an entry-level job.

A.S. Programs in Computer Information Systems

Students enrolled in a computer information systems A.S. program can learn about designing computer networks, maintenance techniques, installation of operating systems and basic software application operation. Graduates of this two-year program can seek various entry-level jobs with non-profit firms, consulting companies, retail technology stores, and state and government agencies. Admission criteria require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Apart from computer-related courses, students can become proficient in database management, word processing and spreadsheets. Participants are provided hands-on learning experience through computer laboratories. Students can augment coursework and lab studies through participation in internships. Typically, coursework in these programs includes topic areas such as:

Those who successfully complete computer information systems associate’s degree programs can choose from various employment options in various entry-level jobs with job titles such as:

While recruiters of information and computer systems managers may hire candidates with an associate’s degree and work experience, most job givers employers prefer candidates who have completed of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in computer-related fields. Schools may offer bachelor and master degrees in information systems management, computer information systems, or computer science. More hands-on training is usually imparted to associate’s degree holders. Graduates may opt to join the workforce immediately or transfer to a four-year institution.

Graduates would benefit from certifications that would help demonstrate knowledge and skills to potential employers. Students are prepared for various certifications in some programs. In addition to CISCO certifications, an MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) or MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certification may be obtained by students.
