University of Maryland College Park Bachelor Degree Program in Environmental Science and Policy

University & College Info May 26, 2013

Our lifestyle is shaped by what we put out into the environment. While it is safe to say that health and medicine have improved drastically since the 1800s where the life expectancy was about 40 or less, there is still much work to be done. The University of Maryland at College Park offers a bachelor degree program in environmental science and policy, which is a program for undergraduate students that is highly complex and involves working with three different colleges and eight departments.

What the UMD Program Entails

The Environmental Science and Technology Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program covers some of the most important aspects of the environment, including problem solving ability, and the merging of science and policy making. Students can choose between one of twelve areas of concentration and work closely with faculty members for problem solving projects. This way, students can work their way into a leadership position. The B.S. degree can lead to an exciting career as an environmental scientist, analyst, policy analyst, or a sustainability coordinator. Some students at UMD go on to become educators at prestigious universities.

The program starts with fundamentals of the environment, such as science, ethics, laws and standards pertaining to water and organic produce. Then, students will learn about agriculture, economics, restoration, soil and water resources, and the role of wildlife on ecology. Later on in the program, students will deal with biodiversity, surface processes and geo-sciences. This is truly a unique curriculum since three different college departments are involved in the education.

More Niceties by UMD

The bachelor’s degree in environmental science and policy would only be textbook learning, if not for the interactive programs that UMD has created. For example, the internship option lets students work under the supervision of an established professional while keeping the academic credits. Mentors can help clarify career goals, prepare for employment and develop deeper concentration into the field.

The UMD program also offers networking opportunities courtesy of a number of student organizations. The AshokaU Terp Changemakers is a community of entrepreneurs, while the College Park Law Society specializes in law school subject matter. There are also more jovial societies and associations, such as the Maryland Adventure project, the Maryland Mock Trial for law students, and Scientific Terrapin for writers.

Students can participate in the Maryland Student Researchers Program, which is an ideal feature for students who do not have strong experiences in research or environmental work. This program allows undergraduates to work with professionals or at least teaching assistants who are at the Ph.D. level. Field trips include wildlife restoration assignments, marine and coastal projects, and learning sustainability in farming and plants.

Students who want to be involved in changing life for the better, a solid education in what makes life prosper and avoid contamination is required. The University of Maryland at College Park can give this to you with their bachelor degree program in environmental science and policy. It’s just a matter of formalizing your education and learning the science of environment and humanity.
