University of Maryland College Park Bachelor Degree Program in Landscape Architecture

This fuses together the discipline of landscaping with creative and sustainable designs. The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland College Park offers two degree programs in landscaping architecture. The undergraduate Bachelor in landscape architecture is an accredited program that meets the requirements for licensure.
UMD’s Landscape Architecture Training and the Future
The essential dynamics of landscape architecture is community, regional and urban design that will be compatible with a sustainable future. The program uses a design studio where students can assist in the observation and research of the cultural and ecological effects of site planning. Specific issues are addressed concerning rapid urbanization and its endangerment to fragile and important eco-systems. The primary goal of the program is to produce an awareness of the relationship between human development and their effect on the environment.
Mew Facilities and Equipment at UMD Emerge
The computer studio was first integrated into the Plant Sciences Building in 1996. Sophomore, juniors, and seniors work within the studio, using an individual computer work station and a drafting table. There is a variety of software programs available, as well as full Internet access. Students can work with faculty and other students around the world to examine and explore changing landscapes and technology. Participants who have worked on the site have created an image bank that successfully integrates sound, images, text, video and animation as a source for new instructional materials.
Landscape architecture is an environmental profession that encompasses the analysis, design and stewardship of natural and constructed environments. It is one of the most diverse professions available in design. Career opportunities for students with a degree can be found in residential planning, parks and recreation, transportation corridors, hospitality and resorts, therapeutic gardens and much more.
UMD’s Venture into Landscape Architecture
The University of Maryland College Park has a limited enrollment in the landscape architecture program. Preference is given to students graduating directly from high school and who intend to use the four year program as their major. Admission for transfer students is limited. Transfer students may be accepted based on an approved graphic portfolio. An excellent portfolio may exempt the student from the first year of the program. Students seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in landscape architecture must complete 45 credits, in accordance with the University of Maryland College Park policy.
