Accredited Online Ph.D. Programs Offered by Online Universities
Higher Education Articles February 26, 2013Universities and colleges offer online Ph.D. programs that are accredited where students can use a computer and complete the doctoral degree program at their own pace. Students who want to enroll in these programs are usually required to have completed both an undergraduate and graduate degree.
The Division of Continuing Education at University of Florida offers two accredited online doctoral programs. The online Ph.D. in Latin and Roman Studies and Ph.D. in Classical Civilization both combine online courses, on-campus studies and independent study. Students who are in both online Ph.D. programs should consult with faculty advisors to develop individual study program, which meet standard prerequisites for the desired doctorate. It takes sixty hours of coursework to complete either Ph.D. online program; of those, thirty are required to be completed on campus. Dissertation defense, elective and required courses, and supervised teaching need to be conducted on campus. Each online Ph.D. program needs special-topic and comprehensive examinations, which students need to complete in the presence of faculty.

Digital Campus programs at the University of Minnesota offer various online Ph.D. programs, including one in international education. This hybrid online Ph.D. program is generally suitable for working educators aspiring to become college administrators or instructors. Online courses transpire during the spring and fall semesters while on campus class-room instruction is imparted during the summer.
Students who are enrolled in the international education online Ph.D. program are assigned to groups known as cohorts. Each cohort will have its own schedule of classes, which every member of the group has to complete together. Research and courses concentrate on issues and theories that face international educators, including educational policies, organizational change, program evaluation, and cultural differences.

Nova Southeastern University offers an online Ph.D. in Occupational Therapy program in which most coursework is delivered online. For four days every semester, students need to conduct research and take intensive courses on-campus. Both on-campus and online courses concentrate on four areas, research, entrepreneurship, leadership, and advanced practice. Students in online Ph.D. programs participate in clinical work in clinics and hospitals.
The nation’s only online doctoral degree in physical therapy is offered at Nova Southeastern University; employed physical therapists that want to conduct research and teach can enroll in this program. Faculty-supervised online classes are taken by students in the form of independent study. The online Transition Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (T-DPT) is also offered at Nova Southeastern University; this is an intermediate course between a master and doctoral degree in physical therapy. The university’s doctoral programs are primarily taught online, but students are required to attend on campus classes once every semester.
