Adult Education in Ohio: School Options and Overviews

There are over two hundred career training and adult education schools in Ohio; this network is a component of the University System of Ohio. There is a wide range of programs from basic adult literacy to skills enhancement and career training.

Adult Education Programs at Penta Career Center

Adult education for students who want to learn new skills or improve existing skills are offered at Penta Career Center, which is located in the town of Perrysburg near Toledo, Ohio. Corporate training services, job training, General Educational Development (GED), and basic adult literacy are available.

GED Preparation and Adult Literacy Program

Basic math, writing and reading skills are covered in this program that students can use to prepare for the GED or high school equivalency test. Penta Career Center is a state-approved GED test site and offers free prep classes.

Automotive Technology Program

Students prepare for entry-level careers in automotive services and review for the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests in HVAC systems and brakes through the automotive technology program.

Nurse Aide Program

Successful completion of this program will make students eligible to receive certification as nurse aides in the state of Ohio and this program prepares them for employment at long-term care, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. The nurse aide program combines classroom study and clinical experience.

Re-modeler, Contractor, and Builder Technology Program

This program teaches skills in areas such as electricity, plumbing, carpentry and masonry. The overall concentration is on technologies and basic concepts applied to the construction industry.

Fabrication and Welding Program

In the fabrication and welding program, aspiring welders study first aid, computer skills, fabrication, and shop safety. Students will receive training in basic welding techniques. Interviewing and job seeking skills are also covered.

Programs at Columbus City Schools Department of Adult and Community Education

Columbus City Schools Department of Adult and Community Education concentrates on offering lifelong learning opportunities in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), workforce development, and General Educational Development (GED). In addition to campus programs, there are numerous online classes that are available.

English for Speakers of Other Languages Program

The school offers free advanced, intermediate and beginning level ESOL classes for English language learning; these classes cover basic citizenship, writing, reading, speaking and listening. ESOL students are also offered a special GED class.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Program

Students should complete this program, if they are interested in becoming a HVAC technician; the program covers troubleshooting, operation, installation, design, and theory for cooling and heating systems. Gas, electric, EPA, and R410A certification testing is completed in the program.

Program for Office Systems Specialist

Students enrolled in this program are imparted skills and knowledge that they are expected to have in any office setting. Students will receive hands-on training in general computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Basic math and composition skills are also covered.

Practical Nursing Program

Successful completion of the practical nursing program will lead to students being eligible to take the NCLEX-PN, in order for them to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. The program is approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing and combines classroom study along with clinical experience.

Program in Stationary Engineering

Once students have completed this course, they are prepared for the stationary engineer or high pressure boiler operator license examination. The course concentrates on the safe use of pollution control equipment, pumps, cooling and condensers towers, steam turbines, and boilers, along with Ohio licensing laws.
