Factors to Consider When Choosing the Right Logistics Graduate School

Higher Education Articles May 7, 2015

Students in graduate degree programs in logistics will be ready to manage global supply chains and their complexities, such as services, money, information, and movement of goods. They will learn how to increase the strategic advantage of the company by leveraging these systems. These programs are intended for those with experience in the world of business and range from nine months to two years.

Choosing the Right Logistics Graduate School

Admission criteria to logistics graduate schools commonly require incoming students to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). In many programs, students without work experience are not considered. A background in engineering, math, or science is a requirement for admission to some schools. Four-year universities and colleges are among the schools that commonly offer logistics programs.

In this article, we take a look at some important factors you must consider when you choose the right logistics graduate school:

Connections

Schools with their own centers of excellence or logistics research organizations can facilitate the gaining of work experience by enrolled students even as they are pursuing a degree. Students at client corporations can make high-level contacts; they can also seek full-time positions at school-sponsored organizations. Existing alumni associations may have networking opportunities for students to help them find a position after they graduate.

Cost

It costs about $7,500 for tuition alone (without considering books, students fees, or living expenses) to enroll at a state school. The amount can exceed $50,000 for admittance to programs offered by private schools. Scholarship programs can be found on schools’ websites. School-sponsored and corporate-sponsored financial scholarships abound for study in the logistics field.

Commitment

Admission to a logistics graduate program involves a time commitment. Full-time weekday programs are available at most schools; online or night classes are only offered by a few. Some schools offer part-time programs aimed at students with a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree along with corporate experience.
