The American School of Correspondence, also known as the American School, is located near Chicago in Lansing, Illinois. Courses are offered online within two different tracks, including a college track and high school track from the American School.

Overview of American School of Correspondence

Established in 1897, the American School of Correspondence enrolled more than three million students. Located in the southern Chicago suburb of Lansing, Illinois, the American School offers students a flexible, alternative way of completing their high school education. Both colleges and employers accept the diploma given to students at the American School.

The American School courses are offered through the internet. The school does not have any entrance examinations for courses, and students are able to enroll at any point during the year. Tuition fees paid by students will cover study guides, textbooks, and four years of education. There are approximately twenty different annual scholarships offered to students by the American School, so students can further their educations.

Study Programs

Students who are enrolled at the American School can study at their own pace, as well as at home; the school allows students to take up to four years to complete their studies in one of two possible tracks with over seventy courses. In each program, students need to complete eighteen units of credits to graduate; in order to receive their diploma, students need to complete four in a half units at the American School.

Those interested in earning a high school diploma and getting trained in their current career fields should opt for the general high school track. Others who aspire to pursue a college education after earning a high school diploma can enroll in the college preparatory track offered at the school. Coursework focuses on foreign language, math and science courses that universities or colleges may require from enrolled students.

Enrollment

The American School attracts around 50,000 students globally, the majority of whom are in the entertainment and sports fields and usually have busy schedules, which do not allow them time for conventional schooling. Subsequent to transcript review, students will be given credits for a majority of high school classes previously completed; this excludes ROTC courses, physical education, driver’s education, music, or any religion. Students who have been home-schooled can earn up to five units of credits towards their diploma by passing comprehensive examinations offered by the American School.

Accrediting the American School

The American School enjoys regional and national accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, which recognizes it as a Special Function School. The Illinois State Board of Education recognized the American School as a non-public secondary school.
