Schools Offering Taxation Programs

Many schools offer master’s degree programs in taxation targeted at accounting professionals with prior work experience. Both weekend and evening classes may be featured to accommodate working students who cannot handle a full-time daytime course load. Graduate level training may be offered to help law students interested in taxation, through degree programs leading to a Master of Laws (LL.M.) or a Juris Doctor (J.D.). The following schools feature high among reputed national universities, in addition to possessing other distinctions.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (a public research university) 39th on its 2010 list of top national universities in the United States. An executive-style Master of Science (M.S.) in Taxation program is offered through the College of Business to benefit working professionals. Admission criteria require incoming students to have two years’ prior work experience before they can begin this weekend and evening program. Coursework covers subject areas such as tax policy, taxation of partnerships and corporations, financial statements analysis, and tax decision-making. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked the program fourth among its list of the best graduate business schools for accounting in the country.

University of Denver in Colorado

The Princeton Review ranked the University of Denver – a private research institution of higher learning – among its list of Best Colleges in the West. The Daniels College of Business features a graduate tax program aimed at students in both law and accounting. Candidates of both backgrounds take the same courses – directly based on policies of the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury. After they complete the program, graduate law students are awarded a Master of Laws (LL.M.). All other graduates receive a Master of Taxation (M.T.). The school offers a dual degree program jointly with the Sturm College of Law, wherein enrollees may pursue an LL.M. and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) concurrently.
