The Best Petroleum Engineering Schools and Colleges in the United States

Higher Education Articles December 10, 2012

A petroleum engineering degree can open the door to a career where the degree holder will get to drill, explore and transport gas and oil. Coursework includes fluid dynamics, physics, chemistry, geology, and math. An individual who holds an undergraduate degree is likely to be employed in areas such as facilities production and surveillance, while ones who hold a graduate degree can expect to be employed in reservoir engineering and research and on-site drilling operations. In this article, we have listed some of the Best Petroleum Engineering Programs in the United States.

Stanford University in Stanford, California

Stanford University began operating in 1891, it is the nation’s largest university campus and the school was built on an area spread over 8,100 acres. The university was rated the second best graduate engineering program in the nation (source: the 2010 rankings of the U.S. News & World Report). Students enrolled in the university’s Master of Science (M.S.) in Petroleum Engineering program are trained for advanced roles in the industry. Students are expected to do research on transient well analysis, carbon sequestration, simulation and engineering, reservoir modeling, pipeline transport, oil and gas recovery, non-Newtonian fluids, environmental and groundwater issues, geothermal energy, and energy industry management. Coursework includes heat transfer, gas injection processes, contaminant hydrogeology and aquatic chemistry.

To achieve greater specialization in the field, the Energy resources Engineering program (also known as the Engineer in Petroleum Engineering program) takes three years to complete and has additional engineering coursework. Doctoral degree students aspiring for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) are prepared for a career in research in petroleum-engineering including petroleum geology exploration and equilibrium thermodynamics. Alternatively, they can choose coursework in the energy resources engineering field such as environmental economics and geothermal reservoir engineering and environmental economics. The school has 18,498 enrolled students.

Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio

Marietta College began functioning in 1835 in Marietta, Ohio, a town that veterans of the Revolutionary War established. The school was rated the Midwest’s second best university (source: the 2011 rankings of the U.S. News & World Report). The college offers a liberal arts program known as the Bachelor of Arts in Petroleum Engineering. This program allows only sixty enrollments annually and enjoys accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission. Internships are completed in the field of petroleum engineering by students who have to participate in a group design project during the final semester. Coursework includes natural gas engineering, reservoir engineering, hydrocarbon phase behavior, and petrophysics. The college has 1,597 enrolled students. If students wish to contact this college, they can visit it at Irvine Bldg., Marietta, OH 45750. Alternatively, students can call the college authorities at (740) 376-4643.
