Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Business Administration

Students who seek entry level careers working with financial concepts in the business world should consider enrolling in an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Business Administration program with accounting as an area of concentration. Typically, the associate degree program will take two years to complete, if students are enrolled full-time; additionally, students may transfer credits earned in an associate degree program to a four-year bachelor degree program in business administration.

A.A.S. in Business Administration: Accounting

Knowledge of financial disclosure laws, risk assessment and tax systems is imparted to students in these programs; additionally, students will learn standard business concepts in subject areas such as economics, management, finance and marketing. Computer application skills, critical-thinking skills, and written and oral communication skills can also be developed by students. They can translate these skills into various educational and professional goals. Admission criteria usually require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma.

Typically, the degree programs include a core of coursework concentrating on fundamentals of business, along with a set of accounting courses that focus on concepts such as computer applications and taxation in accounting. Students who have completed the business administration associate degree program with an accounting emphasis should consider furthering their education by enrolling in a business administration bachelor degree program. The bachelor degree program may qualify individuals to become professional accountants, and usually offer a concentration option in accounting. Students may advance beyond the bachelor degree program by pursuing the master and doctoral degree programs in accountancy and business administration; these programs will help business professional advance to positions in academia or management.

A majority of states require Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) to have completed one hundred fifty credit hours of study that may be satisfied by completing a Master of Accountancy program or a Master of Business Administration program with a focus on accounting. Individuals will be allowed to interact with the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as gain professional advantages if they are practicing accountancy with the CPA designation.
