Associate of Business Science (A.B.S.) in Individualized Studies Degree

Majors Overview May 23, 2013

In this article, students will learn about individualized studies that may include business-focused courses or cover various other topics. Students will receive information on career prospects and courses to make an informed decision about their education.

Associate Degree Program in Individualized Studies

Schools may not offer individualized studies degree programs as Associate of Business Science (ABS) degrees, but may offer them instead as Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Individualized Studies (A.I.S.) degrees. These degree programs are designed for students who want to select their own coursework with the intention of improving their individual personal and professional goals.

Students who are enrolled in an associate degree program in individualized studies will be able to tailor a curriculum that meets their own specific interests when their goals can’t be met in an already established program. For instance, individuals who want to work for or own an environmental health organization can choose environmental ethics and ecology classes along with business coursework. Programs in individualized studies might not be meant for transferring to a four-year bachelor degree program, but depending on the coursework, it can fulfill this purpose as well.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma. Students may be required to declare an area of concentration and outline their intended course of study. In addition, it might be necessary to state on the admission application that you have consulted with faculty members to help prepare a program.

Program Coursework

The individualized studies program coursework varies depending on the intended career interests and goals of each student. With a concentration in business, for instance, students should select course topics that will cover that aspect of the degree, along with topics that fulfill the individualized aspect. Students may take the following classes in the individualized studies program:

•Atmospheric science
•United States history
•Database design
•Human Physiology
•Spanish
•Forensic science
•Accounting
•Graphic design
•Psychology
•Principles of management

Career Options

Those who graduate from an associate’s degree program in individualized studies may choose from numerous career options corresponding to many customized degree plans. Students usually have a career goal before they enroll in such a program. While there are those who seek coursework that will help them become entrepreneurs, there may be others with different professional objectives.

Continuing Education Information

Once they have completed the associate’s degree program, students may opt for continuing education through a four-year bachelor degree program. They could either choose to complete a degree program with a traditional area of concentration such as sociology, law, geology and business or opt for a bachelor’s or master’s degree in individualized studies.
