Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Program (Generalist)

Majors Overview March 16, 2014

Students will study the different areas of administration for a good understanding of business when they take a generalist program for a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree. Instead of focusing on a specific area, such as accounting or human resources, they will study several topics that are usually offered for specialization. The purpose is to prepare students for jobs as supervisors, managers, and other business leaders.

B.B.A Programs for a Generalist Degree

Students enrolled in a general studies degree program in Business Administration are trained to seek diverse employment choices. Subjects such as accounting, computer information systems, entrepreneurship, marketing, finance and management are integrated into the coursework to impart a broad education. Projects and simulations are devised to train students for leadership positions in business.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

A general business degree can equip students with a comprehensive basis of knowledge in every business discipline. Coursework in business administration programs typically includes general education classes and core courses with subjects focused on business. Many decision-making techniques, computer-related subjects and business subjects are surveyed in these courses. Coursework often covers topic areas such as:

•Statistics
•Marketing
•Business law
•Business writing
•Economics
•Finance
•Business technology
•Accounting
•Management
•Business communication

Career Choices

Those who successfully complete a generalist business administration degree can seek entry-level careers in various business sectors, such as accounting, payroll management, project management or marketing. Graduates may opt to start their own business or seek positions such as:

•Human resources assistant
•Administrative manager
•Sales manager
•Account manager
•Payroll clerk

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates can pursue continued education by earning a master of business administration (M.B.A.), after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Advanced education can help ensure promotions or better employment opportunities. Schools also offer doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in Business Administration that bachelor’s degree holders may enter. Students may also seek positions in research or academia within the field of business.

Students who decide to join the workforce immediately after they graduate from a bachelor’s program may need to pursue continuing education in order to stay abreast of technological advancements and industry trends.
