Degree Overview: Associate in Computer Programming – Java Option

Majors Overview September 9, 2013

Since the Java programming language is covered in the curricula of the majority of associate’s degree majors in computer science or computer programming, students do not typically need to seek it out as a separate option. Associate degree program graduates will be trained for careers in the web programming and information technology (IT) sectors.

Associate Degree Program in Computer Programming

Students who are enrolled in computer programming associate degree program will be taught the principles of fundamental operating platforms, including C++ and Java. They also study key computing areas, including data security and management. Students are imparted various professional skills such as the skills required to navigate a treasury of foundational code, carrying out debugging operations and writing code through the use of computer-assisted software engineering (CASE) technology.

In addition to software, students concentrate on computer hardware fundamentals. They will be required to understand concepts central to the PC’s internal architecture, including input/output (I/O), process control, and memory management. Associate degree program graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions in fields such as software applications and development, analytics, and computer programming.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a general educational development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma. Individuals who complete courses in basic computing, science and math, among other developmental areas will likely benefit.

Program Coursework

The associate degree program is comprised of lab-based and classroom instruction in the theoretical and technical aspects of computer hardware and applications, and programming. Program course topics usually include the following:

•Systems analysis
•Database design
•Web development
•Advanced Java
•Basic Java

Career Options

Associate degree program graduates will have the ability to dive into the testing and creation of programs, and work with other members of the technical team to ensure that applications work efficiently. They can enter various occupations that may include the following:

•Programmer analyst
•Java developer
•Software developer
•Computer analyst
•Computer programmer

Continuing Education Information

Some entry-level software development and programming jobs are available to associate’s degree holders; however, bachelor’s degree holders in relevant areas of specialization are preferred by most employers. Hence, professionals who hold an associate’s degree should consider earning a bachelor’s degree with most programs allowing students to transfer credits earned from an associate degree program to a four-year bachelor degree program.
